OFA Blog: Remembering Senator Ted Kennedy
Rest in Peace Senator Kennedy! Thank you SO MUCH for your years/decades of hard work. This clip is from the 2008 Democratic National Convention. I was so moved by him during that week. I wish I would have paid more attention to his work and commitments sooner. I know that he and his work-style will be greatly missed! We need more Senators like him! I can’t remember the last time I cried over the passing of someone that was not directly connected to me – he was that kind of public servant!

Getting out of the way so that women can save the world
This article is a reaction to the NYTimes Magazine’s recent feature concerning Women’s Rights. I agree with what Ann Freedman is saying in her review of the series.
This document is from a grassroots organization I was involved with when I lived in the Dominican Republic.

7 Reasons Why the Republican Party Will Win Big in 2010
This blog post is written by a GOP supporter but I do think some of the points he addresses are either merited or something the DNC needs to think about as 2010 approaches.
I didn’t think the Town Hall antics would reach my home state of Delaware but sadly it did. An interesting article about those who still do not believe that President Obama is not a US Citizen. I wonder if they would be satisfied if Senator McCain became president considering that he was born on a US Base that is US soil according to law but he was not born in one of the fifty states. Though what is more important is for the US to find out what are some of the Birthers grievances that is causing them to act out so strongly – I think if we can get to the root of this we can end this “movement.”

Finances
So as I was reading an old NYTimes article Sunday I came across an article about financial advise for recent graduates and though I graduated college 5 years ago I decided to check out the article. Well Beth Kobliner, Ramit Sethi and Madison Nipp all answered questions from people dealing with finances and I learned A LOT. So please click on that article and follow these people, if you are on Twitter, or buy their books or read their blogs. I saw a few other articles on the NYTimes website and decided to link all of them here. I hope you learn something and take steps towards financial stability.

Delaware State Representative John Kowalko, who I know through his daughter, is featured. He was instrumental in getting the Wind Energy Bill passed in Delaware. I am glad that my home state is left in good hands.

International Women’s Day 2009 “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls”
I am really hoping that a positive outcome from the unfortunate Chris Brown/Rhianna domestic violence situation is a re-evaluation of violence against women especially in developing nations that assume that the problem is improved simply because a woman can now file a police report and appear in court against her attacker in their countries (yes US I’m talking to you

Obama Creates White House Women’s Council
Should Michelle Cover Up?
Honestly I think a lot of this conversation shows the generation gap in this country. The average age of the Senate is 65 and the House is about the same meaning “everyone” is/can be a member of the AARP (My congressman uses the Amtrak senior discount to get to D.C. each day). The first lady is no where near that age and her dress reflects that! The younger generations don’t wear stockings and sleeveless is ok for most occasions as long as it isn’t spagetti straps. My only criticism is that I’m not sure if the first lady really gets just how conservative Washington is when it comes to fashion. At minimum she should make sure she has sleeves on when she heads towards Capitol Hill and when meeting certain dignitaries and foreign leaders.

NYC Mayor hones Spanish to woo Voters
New Idea on Capitol Hill – To Join Senate, Get Votes
I actually disagree with this. The extra time and cost to a State to run special elections is unnecessary. Indirectly, the people do vote in the Senator as they voted in the Governor who makes a temporary appointment/decision to keep things running until a proper election can be held. I would hate for a candidate to become a Senator during a special election only because he had the cash on hand/connections to beat out a better candidate due to the tight time frame. What happened in Illinois is an exstreme case, lets not disrupt a working system because of a bad outlier or two. Also, I hope this teaches people to research those they are voting for to avoid what occured in Illinois – do your homework

Pepsi to roll out products with natural sugar
Yea Pepsi!! I don’t even like Pepsi but I may pick up a box of this stuff. We as consumers need to support these efforts and let the big companies know that we will not tolerate products that are not good for our bodies. The Corn Lobby said, in its PR commercial, that HFCS is okay in moderation. The problem is HFCS is in practically EVERYTHING we consume – that is not moderation. This in no way is a perfect solution, the price should not be as inflated as it is, but its a step in the right direction.

I’m surprised that no one is talking about the fact that if all Republican males can say about her performance is how they reacted when she winked that they are being sexist. Palin On Fox News: Couric Annoyed Me
I have to say that if Palin wants to talk to the American people without a filter then she should give more speeches or make unfiltered statements at press conferences. She should not get upset at people doing their jobs. No one forced her to be interviewed by Katie Couric and if she is from the “media elite” you knew that before you sat down with her. If you are a real maverick why not be interviewed by a Washington outsider say a reporter from the local Wasilla paper or TV station. Just something to think about.

I don’t think so I think that we (women and those who support female equality in politics) need to realize that in the case of the US it is going to take time because our system is not set up to be friendly to change let alone political challengers. Parliamentary and proportional representational systems are friendlier to challengers and open to change.
