The Double-Latte Project – January 2011: The 2012 Project
The Double-Latte Project is my new personal philanthropy project. To read more about the Double-Latte Project visit the Double-Latte page on this blog.
As you can tell by the title of this post the organization I am donating to in January is The 2012 Project hosted at the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University.
The mission of The 2012 Project according to their website is:
To increase the number of women in legislative office by identifying and engaging accomplished women 45 and older from underrepresented fields and industries. These include finance, science, technology, energy, health, environment, small business and international affairs. Outreach to women of color and diverse backgrounds will also be a priority.
I encourage you to join me in making a donation to this great project (feel free to match my donation of $10.10)! Simply, click here or on the logo below and indicate on the form that your donation is for The 2012 Project.
Why did I choose The 2012 Project? I chose The 2012 Project for three reasons: (1) I believe in the importance of increasing the number of women in politics in the United States and around the world; (2) I have witnessed first hand the quality work that the Center for American Women in Politics has done to increase the number of women in politics in the United States; and (3) full-disclosure I am working on my graduate studies at Rutgers and have worked and interacted with this staff and I wanted to start the impact of The Double-Latte Project close to home and The 2012 Project is the perfect project for me to do just that.
Looking to the name of this project why is 2012 so important? Well according to The 2012 Project, 2012 is an important year to increase the number of women running for office in the United States because:
2012 presents a once-in-a-decade opportunity for women to increase their numbers in office. Following the 2010 census, every congressional and state legislative district in the country will be redrawn, and new and open seats will be created. Reapportionment creates opportunity, and we know that women have more success winning open seats. By significantly increasing the number of women who run for office during the post-reapportionment election year, we can increase the number of elected women.
